My answer to that: A platforming game without platforms
Only enemies, upgrades, projectiles, etc. that push the player up or allow a jump
This game was made by just me within 48 hours for the GMTK Jam 2018.

Details
A platformer without platforms. Damage launches you! Use the jump and health items! Fast (difficult) skill based gameplay.
Grunt enemy = Damage upon touch, kills enemy, upwards and sideways knockback
Saw blades= Damage, upwards knockback
Void = Instant death
Health item = +1 Health
Jump item = +1 Jump anywhere
Controls
A and D or Left Arrow and Right Arrow to move left and right
Spacebar to jump
ESC to pause the game (conserves momentum)
Any key to resume
Enter to restart at last checkpoint
Backspace to restart complete game
Features to still be implemented (?)
Shooting with knockback
Explosions with knockback
Wind = No damage, pushes in direction
Bullet = Damaging projectile shot by enemy, jump
Vine = No damage, allows climbing up
Water = No damage, allows slow fall
Lava = Damage, no knockback, can be passed through
Other
I used music and colored square images I had already previously made.

Thanks so much for playing! I really loved seeing someone play my game and see how you deal with the mechanics but be able to progress. You're totally right by saying that people won't see the whole game and all mechanics because of the difficulty, and you also totally saw that I made it difficult to give it longevity.
